Nuruldiner Sarajibon

The East India Company subjugated the commoners of Bangal, Bihar and Orrissa to unprecedented torture to fill up their coffers. They appointed sub-administrators under them who in return for a part of the revenue continued the atrocities. Debi Singh was one such appointee, who with assistance from the Zamindar of Dimla tyrannized the commoners. Forced to sell their property and even their children the peasants of Rangpur couldn’t still suffice the greed of their masters. Browbeaten they eventually revolted. With Nuruldin as the Nabab and Dayaram Sil as his deputy a parallel government was setup. The rebellion though short-lived left a remarkable mark in the hearts of the people. The company regiment under the leadership of Lt. MacDonald suppressed the uprising. Nuruldin was killed, and the rebellion came to an end.

The play Nuruldiner Sarajibon is based on Syed Shamsul Haque’s poem of the same name. Based on this event from history, it is the tale of a kind-hearted peasant Nuruldin, his simple life and his ascent to a leader who helps unite his fellow people and fight against their despot.
